Where to start when there is so much too say and you know that whatever words you'll put together won't do that masterpiece any justice?
Saffron's amazing talent , Evie and Abel's heartbreaking story and the deep theme of this book, blew me away.
If you are familiar with the author's other works, you recognize right away her poetic writing. Very few authors touch me like she does. Gods & Monsters is raw, and sometimes violent, yet so beautiful and heart-breaking. I'll never forget my favorite scene of that story, that mixes lust, anger, love and sadness. Such powerful and all-consuming emotions!
It's so easy to relate to the main characters, Evie and Abel. When they met, Evie was only 12 and Abel 14. The unfairness of the situation, their loneliness, the cruelty of Evie's family and that of the entire town, really, as well as everything that's thrown to them, nothing can stop their love from blossoming and explode through the years, but as their love grows, so does their anger.
The intense and original storyline, and the perfectly imperfect characters kept me captivated all along, I felt strongly for them and the devastating downfall I could see coming.
Abel broke my heart with his vulnerability and Evie's gentleness, strength and maturity were exceptional. Their story is a bumpy journey, but at the end, they evolved into beautiful people who adaptated and learned from their mistakes.
This is a story about love, revenge, forgiveness. But also, it poses a philosophical question: How do circumstances shape us, make us into who we are? How are your decisions, our lives influenced by the others' actions and reactions? Until we take the power back in your life, just like Evie and Abel did. Such a deep matter....
